Hello and welcome to this VTC course on PostgreSQL. My name is Dima Kassab and in this course you will learn what is PostgreSQL and how to use it to create database and database objects. This course is in an introductory course and assumes no prior knowledge of databases of SQL Coding. The topics that we will be covering in this course include installation, which includes installing the software and creating the database. We'll also cover Data Types, where you will learn about the main Data Types in PostgreSQL. We'll also cover defining tables and working with them and also transactions, including Savepoints, Commit and Rollback. We'll also talk about more defined tables such as adding or altering columns and their Data Types. We'll talk about the Main Operators and Functions used in PostgreSQL. You will learn how to create Schemas and grant and revoke privileges and finally how to deal with Indexes, what they are and how to create them. The Main Tools I will be using throughout the course are Psql and also pgAdmin. Psql is an SQL Shell that is used to execute SQL Comment and also for administrative purposes. On the other hand pgAdmin is the most popular and rich graphical Open Source Administration and Development Tool for PostgreSQL. The operating system I'm working on is Windows XP, however PostgreSQL can work on almost all of the major platforms including Windows, Linux, 3PSD, Solaris and Mac. Both Psql and pgAdmin are free and Open Source and will be installed when you install PostgreSQL Database. So now after you got an idea about what you will be learning in this course, let's step more about PostgreSQL in the next video.
