Welcome to this VTC tutorial on Adobe InDesign CS5. My name is Brian White and I'll be the author of these tutorials and I look forward to showing you some of the basics of InDesign CS5. Now I have been using InDesign since Version 2 came out, now although this is called CS5, it is really InDesign Version 7 because after Version 2 they created CS, standing for Creative Suite, which includes programs like Illustrator, Photoshop and now Dreamweaver and Flash amongst others, so this is the 7th iteration of the program. It really is a great program. Adobe took over PageMaker, which was one of the pioneers in Desktop publishing and page layout. They eventually decided that PageMaker had run its course and the code couldn't be bettered so they started from scratch and built this truly wonderful program called Adobe InDesign. Now this program has grown so much over the past few years that the publisher, VTC and I decided we needed to do it over two tutorials, so this is Part 1. This is the Beginners tutorial and it covers the basics. So, who is it aimed at? It's aimed at people who have never used a layout program before and it's aimed at people who are, perhaps, switching over from PageMaker or Quark, or some other program like that and they need to know the basics of InDesign and how it works. Now although it's for beginners there's a lot of good stuff there and there's a lot of little nuances that I talk about in the tutorials which give you shortcuts and tricks and how InDesign actually works, so sometimes even if you feel yourself knowing this a lot you can go out and check individual tutorials on certain topics to get some help on how to do things that may seem straightforward. In the next tutorial, which is Part 2, the Advanced tutorial, we talk about some of the new interactive features as well as the Advanced Layout features that have been in InDesign for a long time, many of which have received improvements that really make them a lot better. So, in the next movie we'll take a brief look at the improvements that have been made to InDesign CS5 over the previous versions and after that, in the next chapter, we'll get going.
