This VTC course will provide an overview of one of the cornerstone technologies involved in many web 2.0 applications - JavaScript Libraries. This course gives a basic foundation on how to utilize many commonly used elements. The overview is facilitated by providing information on Prototype Javascript Framework and Scriptaculous, the Dojo Toolkit, Yahoo User Interface Library, and the jQuery Javascript Library, providing experience using those libraries by creating projects that leverage aspects of those individual libraries. James Street shows just how easy it is to get started using Ajax, animation, and more! To begin learning today, simply click on the movie links.
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Training Company's video tutorial series on JavaScript Libraries. My names is James Street and I'll be your tour guide and instructor into the wilds of these JavaScript Libraries. In this video tutorial series, we'll be taking a look at what JavaScript Libraries are, why you might want to use them and how to get started using a few of the most popular libraries out there. Now, of course, we will be covering much more than that, so feel free to reference the outline for all the information we are actually going to cover. This tutorial series is structured to provide you with information about and to give you experience with the available JavaScript Libraries. The overall goal of this series is to get you started using the JavaScript Library of your choice. In order to do this, this tutorial series will give you an overview of what tools are available, what those tools can do and to prepare you to make a choice about what libraries you might want to use for your projects. Ultimately, if you are in a position to make a decision about which library to use, that decision will be a matter of personal discretion based on personal experience. So the purpose of this tutorial series is to help you make the best possible decision. That's why we have structured the course in the way that we have and we will be taking a general overview of some of the more visible JavaScript libraries out there. Then we will follow that up with a bit of a more focused examination of four of the most popular and widely-used libraries. These libraries are Prototype and Script.aculo.us, Dojo, YUI and jQuery. This further examination will not be an exhaustive examination of all of the features and unique elements of the libraries. However, it will give us a good working knowledge of those particular libraries. To provide an exhaustive examination of all of those features would go well beyond the scope of the tutorial series as each library could realistically be covered in its own tutorial series. If you are interested in knowing all there is to know about these and other libraries, please utilize the resources discussed throughout the tutorial series to further your understanding and knowledge. For those libraries that are going to be examined more fully, we'll be taking a look at some practical applications for them to compliment the theory. Each of those libraries has an associated project that we will build and in just a few moments we'll be taking a tour of the finished projects and examining the features we'll be covering in each library. Because of the depth and breadth of knowledge that these projects require, we'll be working with some staged data. In a following tutorial we'll take a look at how we can set up our computers to best benefit ourselves throughout the course for following along with the exercises. After we examine all the different libraries you should be able to use the libraries we discussed without too many issues and consider yourself educated when it comes to the breadth of the JavaScript Libraries that are available. However, if you already know about which JavaScript library you will be using, feel free to jump right into that section. It's appropriate to your needs. While the main audience of this series are those who have little to no experience with these libraries, if you are a bit more experienced you may feel comfortable jumping around from topic to topic. However it is my recommendation that you view these tutorials from start to finish, in order, to maximize your learning experience. And that is a basic overview of what we're going to be covering in this video tutorial series.
