00:00:01,001 --> 00:00:04,000Hey there, and good morning, good evening, whatever time you happen to be sitting in front of the computer and looking at this tutorial. Welcome to the tutorial from the Virtual Training Company on Outlook 2007. My name is Brian Culp. I'll be your tour guide as I show you this new application, or at least the new iteration of Outlook for Microsoft. I've also authored several tutorials for VTC, so it's possible that you may have heard my voice before. I did the Outlook 2003 tutorial, and I've also done a couple of others in the Office 2007 Suites. And this is PowerPoint of course, what I'm showing you here, but it's just a way to get us going and so you get a little bonus learning here, some. PowerPoint stuff. For example, if you want to start a slideshow, just press the F5 key, and bingo it'll start from the beginning. So here we are, once again, our welcome screen, and the idea of this first module is to give you a heads up about what's coming up throughout the modules in this tutorial. And some of you may have used Outlook certainly in the past, and so you know some of these things about what Outlook can do, but of course not everyone has used Outlook as an email application or a time management application before. So I want to give you an idea of what the capabilities of the product are, and also give you a heads, again, on what to expect as we go throughout the chapters of this tutorial. So as you know, and here's another bonus that you have, I'll do my pointer options, I'll choose a felt tip pen here. So, there you go. Right-click choose your pointer options there and you then you can make circles on your PowerPoint presentations, as I will. So in this tutorial we are going to be sending and receiving email. And of course that's probably the first order of business that most people use outlook for. Then we will filter junk e-mail, so we'll deal with our inbox as a store of data, and keep it as clean as possible from the inevitable junk mail that might come in. We'll also use this application to manage time. There's a calendar component of Outlook, and of course we'll show you how to use that calendar to best suit your needs. And there have been a lot of changes to the way that information displays on the calendar, as you'll see. We'll also manage contacts. Another big component of Outlook 2007 is its ability to manage you life, manage your email, your time, your contacts. We'll also manage tasks here in a chapter of the tutorial. So, add a task, what can we do with it, how can we deal with it, how can we flag it, how can we categorize it, all those things. Also, you can think of Outlook as a huge database that represents information that is important to your life, that's vital information. So, nowadays, email becomes an important store of information, and there's a lot of things in our email especially that we want to keep around, so how can we deal with that without making our database of information that Outlook deals with too big. Well, we archive that information, and we'll deal with that task, among others, in this tutorial. And then finally, again this is closely related as Outlook is a data store, how can we leverage it's ability to store data. So, that is what's coming up. I'm going to escape out of my slideshow here, and I'll just discard my ink annotations, and then I'm going to switch over to our application that is the focus of this tutorial, and that is Outlook. Here's the first look at Outlook. And you can see that I have lots of tasks, messages, calendar. And what you might be thinking right now, especially if you've used previous versions of Outlook, you're thinking, well what's the difference? That looks pretty much exactly like Outlook 2003, and very similar to maybe Outlook XP, or prior versions like 2000 and so on. And what I would say to you right away is, you're right. But as you start to get into the application, you're going to see that there has been quite a bit that has changed, and I really like the changes that have been made from Outlook to now Outlook 2007. So, even though there is still an Outlook today, and it displays pretty much the same information, there's a lot of elements of Outlook that really replace the functionality of Outlook today, and you'll see those.. starting in the next module.
