MySQL 5 Administration (Part 1) Course

Welcome to the Virtual Training Company's course on MySQL 5 Administration. This is Part 1 of that course. My name is David Swain and I'm going to be your guide in how to administer or how to manage a MySQL 5 installation. Now I was a staff trainer for a number of years for the original MySQL company and some Microsystems and Oracle as MySQL got acquired by those companies. So hopefully my experience and training there is going to serve you well in these course with VTC. Now, we're talking in this course about database topics that go beyond simple development. In the Part 1 and Part 2 development courses we covered a lot of things, Development Part 1 was just a foundation for programming and we did some simple non-destructive things with the Select Statement. We then expanded on that a great deal by looking into a number of different programming constructs that we could create. We also looked into the ability to manipulate the data as well as simply querying the data. And hopefully you've enjoyed those course. If you haven't taken those courses I strongly suggest that you do so before attempting this course because we assume that you already understand how to perform those things that we taught in those courses. So now what we're going to focus on is how to take care of and how to improve the performance of those databases that we've already created. This course the Part 1 course for database administration is more conceptual in nature. So we're going to spending a lot of time and some slide presentations on what the internals of MySQL server are like and what are some of the processes that you're going to need to perform as a database administrator. What is the basic job of a database administrator and so on. And a little less hands on time. There will be more hands time in Part 2 of the Administration course because then we're going to get into more about how to implement some of those things we talked about in Part 1. So stay tuned for that. The Administration Part 1 course then is the foundation for those more complex topics that we'll talk about in the Administration course Part 2. But these are still introductory level topics. Okay. This is just a survey of the tasks that you will perform as a database administrator and how to do those things in their most basic form. There's a lot more to learn about that and as we go along if there's demand, we'll put in some more advanced courses as well. This course is going to give you a more in depth look at how things work. In the development course we only talked about what you could do with MySQL to manipulate data. Now, we're going to take a look behind the scenes a little bit to see how those things happen and to learn about some of the subsystems in the MySQL Server and some of the variables that we have for being able to tweak the performance of those things. We're also going to take a look at a number of database administrator tools that we can use MySQL. Some of them come with your MySQL installation, others are from trusted third party sources and so we'll take a brief look at some of those things, we're not going to spend a lot of time demonstrating those other pieces of software. But we'll at least give you some idea of where to go to find other tools to help do your job better. Ultimately what you're going to want to do here if you're doing this for work and we're assuming that the majority of people taking this course are working professionally or hoping to work professionally as database administrators for MySQL. The thing that you will ultimately want to achieve is a certification in this. It's something to good to show your existing boss, it's also a really good thing to have in your back pocket when you're trying to get a job and there are plenty of jobs out there for MySQL database administrators. It's a growing trend to be using MySQL especially in the small to medium size business arena. And even some major corporations now are using MySQL quite a bit. So what we're trying to do here is to teach you the job but also to prepare you for taking those exams. As a matter of fact there are two exams that are needed for the database administrator certification for MySQL. And the topics that you need to understand for those we are going to be covering in Parts One and Part 2 of this course. Now there are two exams that you need for certification and I'm not going to claim that the things that we do in Part 1 of this course apply only to the first of those two exams. I'm mixing things up a little bit differently than the people who built those exams. So you will want to take both of these courses before you attempt either of those exams. But rest assured that we are covering all the topics and more than that actually that are on the MySQL 5 DBA Certification Exams. Alright. Let's get started. In the next lesson we're going to take a little bit more detailed look about what we're going to be covering in this Part 1 of the MySQL 5 Administration course.
