PMI: Scheduling Professional (Part 1) Course

Welcome to VTC's course on the subject of Project Scheduling. My name is Vanina Mangano and I will be your instructor. This course is Part 1 in a series of three courses titled PMI Scheduling Professional, meant to give you a thorough review and level of understanding on the topic of project scheduling, as well as a guide to preparing for the PMI Scheduling Professional Certification Exam. Before we go through a course introduction, I like to take a brief moment to introduce myself. I am certified by the Project Management Institute as a project management professional, risk management professional and scheduling professional. I specialize in project management training and course development and have invested in several startups across various industries. I've authored a book on preparing for the Project Management Professional Certification Exam and participated as a subject matter expert for other project management related books and projects. Introduction aside, let's go through the contents of this course. I mentioned that this is Part 1 of a series, which means that we'll be covering critical pieces in a project's foundation as a starting point such as the project lifecycle and a brief review of the nine knowledge areas of project management. We'll also go through the initial building blocks of schedule creating, including the scheduling model. To be more specific, here's a snapshot of what we will be covering: an overview of the five PMI SP exam domains. This will give you an idea of what the exam will cover, which are the areas that you'll be scored on. As I mentioned a moment ago, we'll go through the foundation of a project including the five process groups: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing and a snapshot of the project management knowledge areas. Although our focus is on project scheduling, a strong foundation of project management is necessary and this foundation comes from a guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, also referred to as PMBOK Guide for short. Other areas that we'll cover within this course include the scheduling model, a foundation topic that zeros in on project scheduling specifically. You'll find more detailed information on the scheduling model within the practice standard for scheduling, a supplementary, global standards guide to the PMBOK Guide that provides additional information on the topic of project scheduling. By the way, this additional guide is part of the PMI SP exam and if you are a member of PMI, you can download a free copy of both the PMBOK Guide and the Practice Standard for Scheduling directly from their website as part of your member benefits. We'll also cover the first process of the project, time management knowledge area, define activities. This knowledge area is where the schedule is created and we'll be working our way through it throughout this three-course series. You'll learn more about the creation of the initial activities list, milestone list and the WBS and project scope statement that help us develop these lists. We'll cover the second process as well that works towards creating the schedule; sequence activities where we will take our list of activities and place them in the proper sequence. You'll learn all about precedence diagramming methods and schedule dependencies and towards the end of the course for wrap-up with exam practice questions. And that concludes this introductory movie on the PMI Scheduling Professional Part 1 course contents. I hope you enjoy the course and will be able to use the information and knowledge that you get out of the course towards achieving your PMI SP credential or just in applying the concepts and information towards improving your project management and project scheduling skills.
