Follow a row of CpG sites through cell divisions and watch the methylation pattern get copied, or fail to be copied. After replication every parental site is hemimethylated, and maintenance enzymes restore the pattern with a chosen efficiency, so you can switch the enzyme off and watch methylation dilute by half each division. A simple expression link shows how promoter methylation turns a gene down, with imprinting and X-inactivation as labeled concept panels. The model is simplified and says so.
